about

This was another track that at first was a really short demo that Adam encouraged me to develop. I believe it’s the only track on the album where I play literally all the instruments on it (usually it’s just everything but the drums...). I wanted a Grizzly Bear ‘Yellow House’ era sound to it, especially the drums so I ended up just doing them myself. It seemed easier than trying to explain that I wanted a weird ‘half-army marching band half-distant fireworks’ sound to them.

I wrote the lyrics years ago, it was about my first relationship. It wasn’t something that I saw as a romantic relationship at the time because it was with another girl who I’d been best friends with for years so I didn’t really know what to call it. It wasn’t something that people at school would have let go by without bullying us so I just felt a lot of shame about it all. Either way it was definitely not a healthy relationship (even when we were just friends) and I think I had to deal with a lot of emotional fall out as a result of it. The whole experience of being involved with her just made me grow up too fast which is also why it really felt like a track I should include on this album.

I wrote it in a writing session in Adam’s garage (actually during the same day that I wrote the next track ‘- ‘Keep Time’). It’s got about a thousand clarinets layered all over it which is something I really love doing; if I’m left alone with a song too long you can guarantee I’m going to go a bit crazy with the woodwind.

lyrics

I try and speak while your ghost
Pouts at my shoulder and sighs at my every move
We used to squabble like kids
We used to gossip like wives
Growing old
Getting used
Making dinner plans

It was that summer at mine
Playing at love in the sheets of the attic room
Knock back a bottle of wine
You made me meek and unkind
When you laughed
When you left
When you wanted to
