about

I wrote this one to be a children’s playground song, my initial demo was literally just voices and hands clapping, but we ended up beefing it up and making it a full song in the end. It’s about my disillusionment with the music industry (my favourite topic!) and I wrote it after attending an event in which ‘industry professionals’ judged some music for a competition and wound up going with some incredibly mediocre music that just really wasn’t trying to push the boat out in any way at all. People’s lack of imagination is something that I’ve always found myself very frustrated by. I used to let it get to me way too much and I’m a lot better for it now. Adam actually sorted me out a lot in my thinking - he always says to just concentrate on what you’re doing, if you keep making good things then people will listen.

There’s a quote about how horses wear blinders in races because if they look at the competition then they’ll lose their footing and I suppose that’s what I try and do now, but it’s still hard not to compare yourself to other artists who are at a similar point to you career-wise.

We (myself and Adam) went down to the park in Hebden Bridge where we were living for most of the recording of this release and recorded all the kids playing on this track. I imagine that must’ve looked pretty strange but it wouldn’t be a schoolyard chat without the kids chatting!

lyrics

Painting by numbers I am certain
That the truth isn’t quite what you were hoping for
But I’d applaud

Anyone who could draw the curtain
Keep from paying them lip service
Oh my Lord, I’m getting bored now

La la la la la la la, ah ah ah
La la la la la la la, ah ah ah
La la la la la la la, ah ah ah
La la la la la la la, ah ah ah

Painting by numbers how’m I supposed to
Think with all that racket going on out there
But to be fair
Rhymes can keep you focused somehow
Reasons always leave you hoping
I don’t care, it’s all hot air cause

There’s not a recipe for
There’s not a reigning truth on
Finding yourself becoming
More than aging icon

Painting by numbers if you don’t have
Much to say then just stop talking
Give me strength let me catch my breath

Cash will always keep you crawling
When it rains it must start pouring
Once it’s spent you’re never getting free from it

There’s not a recipe and
There’s not a reigning truth for
Finding a way of being
More than a blatant eyesore

I’ve started getting lazy
I’ve been a guilty party
You’ll find yourself complacent
You’ll play the victim one day
