about

This one was written around 2019 when I was touring with the other project I’m involved in (BC Camplight). I was feeling really burnt out by an intense touring schedule and felt like I could never stop. I wasn’t really looking after myself very well and as much as I love the guys in that touring party and as much as those experiences were very personally formative/informative for me as a musician I still felt somewhat cheated.

I felt like I’d had all these ideas about how life on the road was going to be and I was mostly just drinking myself out of contention and feeling awful in cycles for weeks on end. It was that mismatch of everyone being really proud and happy for me and feeling like things had started moving in a good direction career-wise while inside I was feeling pretty much terrible, and then feeling worse because I knew a lot of people would love to be having the experiences I was having.

I think the lyrics on this one are especially bleak and honest which probably came about as a result of touring with Brian who’s lyrics are the most bleak and the most honest that I’ve ever heard. He’s a wonderful songwriter and I’m very grateful to call him a friend and to get to see some of the magic happening on tour and in the studio.

I wrote this one on my bassist’s little Korg Minilogue using this weird drunken synth patch that he’d made. I just loved the woozy-ness of it and knew I had to use it for something.

This was another track that Adam (Pardey, co-producer) was a really integral part of. I had a whole other idea for the verse melody and he straight up told me that it wasn’t strong enough compared to the chorus.
My writing style is such that I find it quite difficult to do big rewrites like that once I’ve been working on something for a while but I persevered and honestly it turned out so much better than it would’ve otherwise.

This one came out officially on a vinyl compilation with Leeds’ Come Play With Me in 2021 accompanied by another music video I shot in my room and added stop motion newspaper lyrics to, which can be found

lyrics

One more hour and I’ll turn off this true crime documentary
And while we’re here I swear this is the last Chinese I’ll buy this week
Everybody’s hungry so we eat and feel the same

Searching for a paperback that makes me seem more dignified
And look out for a suitcase that best represents my sombre side
No one seems to know me they just nod and say my name

Oh, Give me your hand
Strange as it seems
I’m just a girl
You’re just a means

When you’re alone
Open your mouth
Try not to speak
See what comes out

Grab my money’s worth in cheap shampoo and single serving tea
And check under the bed for socks and for my missing dignity
Crawl into a new bedroom to sleep it off again

Why am I here
Dancing too loud?
Somehow I’m most
Home in a crowd

Look at me now
Last one to leave
Tell me I’m good
No guarantees
