Surrogate Lover

about

This song is about a time way back in 2017 when I came to play an event in Liverpool knowing that there was someone who I really liked living over that way. I spent the whole night getting steadily drunker and drunker, trying summon the dutch courage to call them and ask if they were around. Eventually I ended up going home with someone else I'd met at the event. This person meant nothing to me but I spent the whole evening trying to make it feel like they did because I was craving a connection, which I suppose we all are. When you try and live with an open heart sometimes the wrong people will try and make their way into it.

I wanted a bit of an early St Vincent vibe for this one, and especially in the vocals I tried to emulate her very precise and considered delivery; it’s cold but you know there’s something behind it, sort of like she’s always laughing at a joke you don’t get.

It’s one of my favourites to play live because I get to just concentrate on playing guitar rather than stressing about all the live looping like most of the other tracks from this release. Looping is fun but also probably the most stressful thing you can do onstage.

We have a music video out which we created with the help of Light in
the Tower who are a great up and coming video production company based in Manchester:

lyrics

I made my own bed with this surrogate lover
Was out of his head when I begged for another
Bought me a drink then he bored me to tears
Thought I might get him wet behind the ears

I stayed too long at his staff Christmas party
Then told him my life story drunk on Bacardi
Said that he’d never met anyone like me
I wanted to leave but I smiled politely

I’m fine - just tired
I’d like to leave by nine

Give me your love
Show me what I’ve been missing
Rotten and cold
Dead in the water is it?

I clung too hard to this surrogate lover
He gave me his heart but I asked for another
Let him get on while I stared out the window
I swear I was thinking of you the whole time though

Give me your love
Show me what I’ve been missing
Aching and bored
Something to keep me busy

Give me your love
Show me what I’ve been missing
Rotten and cold
Dead in the water is it?
