about

This is the final song on the album and it’s a sort of weird lullaby. A lot of it is addressed to my 3-year-old nephew and it’s about being cautious about the lure of promised lands. It’s about how I felt growing up and looking at somewhere like America basically. It’s me coming to terms with my ridiculous optimism.

I recorded the piano at an artist’s residency in Sage Gateshead in Newcastle while Adam was recovering from a rare hangover. He was having a nap in the corner of the room while I played this giant amazing
grand piano and I sort of just decided it could be a lullaby for him too. I suppose it’s for me as well, I’m trying to give him advice but really it’s just as much for me and especially the things I wish I’d known growing up.

There’s a point where we recorded some oil in a pan for the line ‘cooking breakfast hot and sweet’ but I’m not sure if we ever managed to make it sound like anything but rainfall, I suppose that’s fine too. I liked that it was the final track and was about my baby nephew. It sort of felt like a nice complete circle to be speaking to the young, trying to offer whatever advice I had after all my bitter tirades. I’m not sure my nephew would actually like the song very much, he’s much more into Progressive House, something with a real beat to it. But I hope he appreciates the sentiment anyway.

lyrics

With a love as thick as water
Prying eyes won’t leave me be
Open arms are waiting for you
In a land across the sea

Maybe I’ll do
How about you
Nothing to see
Leave it to me

Medicine and California
Keep you sane to some degree
Everyone will outperform you
If you love them leave them be

I saw them too
Red white and blue
Vanity fair
Caught unaware

My face is worn
Bitter and torn
I heard the news
Hope it’s not true

Monday lies and Sunday kisses
Cooking breakfast hot and sweet
No one’s really waiting for you
In that land across the sea

Go back to sleep
Try not to speak
Aiming to please
Makes you feel weak

Go back to sleep
Talking is cheap
Look at those eyes
Give yourself time

With a love that seems much older
In a land across the sea
